The Emakhazeni Local Municipality, in collaboration with the Department of Social Development, NIH, SAPS, and other stakeholders, recently hosted a successful roadshow in Belfast, Emakhazeni. The event aimed to promote the Nkangala in-treatment rehabilitation centre for individuals struggling with drug and substance abuse.

Held at a bustling location outside Home Affairs, opposite Spar, and near the taxi rank, the roadshow drew attention from the community. The event was made possible through liaison with the Transversal Unit and the office of the Youth Coordinator.

During the roadshow, two male residents of Emakhazeni who are struggling with substance abuse were identified and selected to undergo rehabilitation and detoxification at the Nkangala centre. Both individuals have expressed willingness to receive treatment.

The roadshow was attended by key municipal leaders, including the Executive Mayor, the Honourable Speaker, and other Councillors. In her keynote address, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Nomhle Mashele, emphasized the gravity of substance abuse in the community, highlighting that drug dealers supplying these young individuals are often members of the same community. She noted that substance abuse has led to a situation where young people are often referred to by derogatory terms, such as "Nyaopes," rather than being recognized by their names. The Executive Mayor also pointed out that criminal activities are often unfairly attributed to substance users, rather than the actual perpetrators. She concluded by emphasizing the need for community support for substance abusers and the rehabilitation centre, underscoring the municipality's commitment to addressing substance abuse and promoting community well-being.

This initiative highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting community health and providing support services for those in need.
